“But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” Luke 15:32 NIV
Luke 15:32 is the closing statement in one of Jesus’ most profound parables—the story of the Prodigal Son. This passage is part of a larger discourse where Jesus responds to the criticism of religious leaders who disapproved of His association with sinners. Through this parable, Jesus reveals the heart of God: a Father who rejoices when the lost return home.
The story follows a young man who, driven by impatience and self-indulgence, demands his inheritance while his father is still alive. He leaves home, squanders his wealth on reckless living, and eventually finds himself in complete ruin. When a severe famine strikes, he is left with nothing, forced to take a job feeding pigs—an unthinkable position for a Jewish man. In his desperation, he realizes that even his father’s servants live better than he does. With humility, he decides to return, not expecting to be reinstated as a son but hoping to be treated as a hired worker.
However, the father’s response is unexpected. Instead of rejection or punishment, he runs to embrace his son, clothing him in fine garments and celebrating his return with a grand feast. This act of mercy and restoration illustrates the boundless grace of God, who welcomes back those who turn to Him with sincere hearts.
Yet, the parable does not end there. The older brother, who remained at home, reacts with resentment. He cannot comprehend why his father would celebrate someone who had been so reckless. The father gently reminds him that love and grace are not about merit but about restoration. “We had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.”
This story is a powerful reflection of God’s character. No matter how far we stray, His love remains constant. He does not wait for us with condemnation but with open arms, ready to restore us.
In my own journey, I have experienced moments where I felt distant from God, weighed down by my own choices. Yet, time and again, I have found that His mercy is always greater than my failures. This truth is not just for me—it is for all of us.
If you feel distant, know that God is always ready to welcome you back. His love is not based on what you have done but on who He is.
God’s love is relentless, His mercy unending. No matter how far we have wandered, He is always ready to restore us. The story of the Prodigal Son reminds us that grace is not earned—it is freely given.
As you reflect on this truth, consider how you can extend the same grace to others. Just as God welcomes us with open arms, we are called to show compassion and forgiveness to those around us.
