“The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him. He did not consult the Baals.” 2 Chronicles 17:3 NIV
2 Chronicles 17:3 highlights the divine favor upon Jehoshaphat, King of Judah, because of his commitment to walking in the ways of his ancestor David. Unlike many of the rulers of his time, Jehoshaphat did not follow the idolatrous practices of the northern kingdom but instead sought to honor God with his leadership. His reign was marked by spiritual renewal, military strength, and a dedication to teaching the people the laws of the Lord.
Jehoshaphat’s faithfulness brought stability and prosperity to Judah. He removed pagan altars, fortified cities, and ensured that the people were instructed in God’s commandments. His devotion was so evident that even neighboring nations took notice, leading some to bring gifts as a sign of respect. His leadership demonstrated that when a ruler prioritizes God’s ways, the entire nation benefits.
However, despite his strong foundation in righteousness, Jehoshaphat made a critical mistake, he formed an alliance with Ahab, the king of Israel. Ahab was known for his wickedness, influenced by his wife Jezebel, and his reign was filled with corruption and idolatry. In an attempt to foster unity, Jehoshaphat agreed to a military partnership with Ahab, a decision that nearly cost him his life.
Before engaging in battle, Jehoshaphat wisely sought God’s guidance, calling upon the prophet Micaiah. The prophet warned that the battle would lead to Ahab’s downfall, but Ahab ignored the message. As predicted, Ahab was killed, and Jehoshaphat barely escaped with his life. This event serves as a powerful lesson on the importance of seeking God’s direction and being cautious about the alliances we form.
Jehoshaphat’s story reminds us that even those who strive to live righteously can make unwise choices if they do not fully rely on God’s wisdom. His reign was largely characterized by faithfulness, yet one misstep in aligning with the wrong people brought unnecessary hardship.
I have faced moments where decisions seemed beneficial at the time but later revealed unintended consequences. This has taught me the importance of seeking God’s counsel in every choice, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.
Walking in God’s ways brings blessing, but aligning with the wrong influences can lead to unnecessary struggles. Seeking His wisdom in every decision ensures that our paths remain secure.
As you reflect on your own life, consider the relationships and commitments you have made. Are they leading you closer to God’s purpose, or are they pulling you away? Trust that God’s guidance will always lead to the best outcome.
