“He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.” Matthew 8:26 NIV
Matthew 8:26 is part of a powerful moment in the Gospels where Jesus demonstrates His authority over nature, revealing both His divine power and the importance of faith. This passage takes place when Jesus and His disciples are crossing a lake, and a violent storm suddenly arises, threatening to overwhelm their small boat. While the disciples panic, fearing for their lives, Jesus remains asleep, undisturbed by the chaos around Him. In desperation, they wake Him, pleading for help.
Jesus responds not only by calming the raging winds and waves but also by addressing the fear in their hearts. “Why are you so afraid?” He asks, followed by a challenge to their faith. His words highlight a profound truth: fear often arises when trust in God is lacking. The disciples had witnessed His miracles, yet in the face of danger, they allowed fear to overshadow their confidence in Him.
This event is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, emphasizing its significance. It serves as a reminder that, even in the most turbulent moments of life, Jesus is present. The storm was real, the danger was evident, but His power was greater.
Fear is a recurring theme in Scripture, and one of the most repeated commands in the Bible is “Do not be afraid.” It is said that there are over 365 verses addressing fear—one for each day of the year. Whether or not that number is exact, what remains undeniable is that God continually calls His people to trust Him rather than be consumed by anxiety.
Fear entered the world alongside sin, disrupting humanity’s perfect relationship with God. Before the fall, Adam and Eve knew no fear, but once sin took hold, so did uncertainty and distress. The ultimate restoration of this brokenness is described in Revelation, where God’s presence will once again dwell fully with humanity, eliminating all fear.
Fear has been described as one of the most subtle yet destructive conditions of the human heart. It can manifest in many ways—uncertainty about the future, financial instability, health concerns, loneliness, or personal struggles. The question is, how do we confront it?
The account of Jesus calming the storm provides a profound answer. When fear grips us, we must turn to Him, recognizing that His authority extends over every situation. His response to the disciples includes three key questions that challenge us to examine our own fears like “Why are you so afraid?” (Matthew 8:26), “Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:25), “Who is this man?” (Matthew 8:27).
These questions invite us to reflect on how we respond to fear and where we place our trust. Over the next few days, I encourage you to meditate on these questions and apply them to the areas of your life where fear tries to take hold.
Fear may be a reality, but it does not have to control us. When we shift our focus from the storm to the One who calms it, we find peace that surpasses all understanding. No matter what uncertainties you face, remember that Jesus is in the boat with you. His presence is greater than any storm, and His power is more than enough to sustain you.
Take time to identify the fears that weigh on your heart. Ask yourself: Where is my faith in this situation? Surrender your anxieties to God and trust that He is greater than any storm you may face.
