“The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke 10:37 NIV
Luke 10:37 concludes one of the most well-known parables in Scripture—the story of the Good Samaritan. This passage is part of a conversation between Jesus and a legal expert who sought to test Him by asking, “Who is my neighbor?” In response, Jesus tells a parable that challenges societal prejudices and redefines the concept of love and mercy.
In the story, a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers, left wounded and helpless on the road. A priest and a Levite, both respected religious figures, see him but choose to walk away, avoiding any involvement. However, a Samaritan—someone from a group despised by the Jews—stops, tends to the man’s injuries, and ensures his recovery by taking him to an inn and covering his expenses.
Jesus then asks the legal expert which of the three men acted as a true neighbor. The expert, unable to even utter the word Samaritan due to deep-seated prejudice, simply replies, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus affirms this answer and commands, “Go and do likewise.”
This parable is not just a lesson in kindness; it is a radical call to break barriers and extend compassion beyond cultural, social, or personal biases. The Samaritan did not consider the wounded man’s background—he simply saw a person in need and responded with love.
In our daily lives, we often encounter opportunities to demonstrate this same kind of mercy. However, personal biases, societal expectations, or even simple indifference can prevent us from acting. The challenge Jesus presents is clear: true love is not selective; it is sacrificial and unconditional.
This story compels us to reflect on how we treat those around us. Are we willing to extend kindness to those who are different from us? Do we allow preconceived notions to dictate our willingness to help? The Good Samaritan’s example teaches that genuine love transcends divisions and calls us to serve with a heart full of grace.
As we navigate our daily interactions, let us be intentional about showing kindness without hesitation. Compassion is not just a feeling—it is an action that reflects God’s love in a tangible way.
Jesus’ parable pushes us to rethink our definition of a neighbor. It’s not about proximity or similarity, but about the willingness to show love and mercy to anyone in need.
The Good Samaritan story teaches us that true neighborly love transcends societal boundaries. It calls us to act with compassion regardless of our differences. As we go through our daily lives, let’s be mindful of opportunities to extend kindness to those around us.
Reflect on your own attitudes and actions toward those around you. Take time to examine your heart and challenge any biases. Seek to be a neighbor to everyone, especially those who are hurting and in need of compassion.
