Psalm 118:6 is a declaration of unwavering confidence in God’s presence and protection. This verse is part of a psalm that celebrates divine faithfulness and deliverance, likely written during a time of great adversity. The psalmist, having faced opposition and hardship, proclaims with certainty: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” This statement is not rooted in human strength but in the assurance that God’s presence is greater than any challenge.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly commands His people not to fear. This instruction is not a mere suggestion but a direct call to trust in His sovereignty. Interestingly, almost every time God says “Do not be afraid,” it is followed by a promise of His presence: “I am with you,” “I will sustain you,” “You are in My hands.” This pattern reveals a profound truth—fear loses its power when we recognize that God is near.
Fear is often something we learn. Many of the anxieties we carry have been shaped by our upbringing, culture, or personal experiences. In my own life, I have seen how the concerns of those around me influenced my own worries. Growing up, I observed how my grandfather was constantly preoccupied with health issues, and over time, I found myself carrying similar fears, especially regarding my children’s well-being.
However, Jesus challenges us to confront our fears by asking a simple yet profound question: “Why are you so afraid?” (Matthew 8:26). This question was directed at His disciples when they panicked during a storm, despite the fact that He was with them in the boat. His words serve as a reminder that fear is often a result of forgetting who is by our side.
If Jesus is present, no storm, no uncertainty, no difficulty is greater than His power. Recognizing His presence transforms the way we face challenges. Instead of being consumed by fear, we can rest in the assurance that He is in control.
When fear arises, the first step is to identify its source. What is it that truly unsettles us? Once we understand its root, we can surrender it to Jesus and find peace in His presence.
God’s presence is the antidote to fear. When we become fully aware that He is with us, our perspective shifts. No storm is too great, no challenge too overwhelming. His presence is our security.
As you reflect on this truth, take a moment to identify the fears that weigh on your heart. Imagine how your life would change if you lived every moment fully aware of God’s presence.
Today, choose to surrender your fears to God. Remind yourself of His promises and declare with confidence: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.” (Psalm 118:6)
