“And they said to him, “We each have had a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” So Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, please.”” Genesis 40:8 NKJV
Genesis 40:8 takes place during a significant period in Joseph’s life, his unjust imprisonment in Egypt. After being falsely accused and thrown into prison, Joseph encounters two of Pharaoh’s officials, the cupbearer and the baker, who are troubled by their dreams. When they express their confusion, Joseph responds with a profound truth: “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.”
This passage highlights Joseph’s unwavering trust in God’s sovereignty, even in the midst of suffering. Rather than becoming bitter over his circumstances, Joseph continues to serve faithfully, recognizing that wisdom and revelation come from God alone. His willingness to help others, despite his own hardship, ultimately sets the stage for his future deliverance. This moment reminds us that even in seasons of waiting and uncertainty, God is actively working behind the scenes, preparing us for greater purposes.
There are seasons in life when we feel forgotten trapped in circumstances beyond our control, wondering if God still sees us. Joseph knew this feeling well. He had been betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Yet, in the midst of his suffering, he did not allow bitterness to take root. Instead, he remained faithful, serving those around him with excellence.
Joseph’s time in prison was not wasted. Even in confinement, he found purpose. He did not dwell on his misfortune or allow self-pity to consume him. Instead, he chose to notice the needs of others. When the cupbearer and baker were troubled by their dreams, Joseph did not ignore them, he engaged, offering them hope and pointing them to God as the source of wisdom.
It is easy to become inward-focused when we are struggling. Pain has a way of making us retreat, convincing us that we have nothing to offer. But Joseph’s story teaches us that even in our darkest moments, we can be a source of encouragement to others.
Joseph’s willingness to serve, even in prison, became the very thing that led to his breakthrough. His interpretation of the cupbearer’s dream eventually brought him before Pharaoh, where he was elevated to a position of great influence. What if Joseph had chosen to remain silent? What if he had allowed his suffering to make him indifferent to those around him? His story reminds us that sometimes, our deliverance is connected to our willingness to serve others.
Joseph did not know how long he would remain in prison. He had no guarantee that his situation would change. Yet, he continued to trust in God’s plan. This is one of the greatest tests of faith, believing that God is working, even when we cannot see the outcome.
Many times, we want immediate answers. We want to know when the hardship will end, when the breakthrough will come. But faith is about trusting that God’s timing is perfect. Joseph’s journey was filled with delays and disappointments, but every step was preparing him for the moment when he would step into his destiny.
When we face trials, we have a choice: we can allow them to make us bitter, or we can allow them to refine us. Joseph chose the latter. He did not let his circumstances define him; he let his faith in God shape his response.
Are you in a season of waiting? Do you feel overlooked or forgotten? Remember that God is not finished with your story. Like Joseph, your current situation is not your final destination. There is purpose in the process.
Instead of focusing on what you lack, look for ways to serve. Encourage someone. Pray for others. Be a light in someone else’s darkness. You may be surprised to find that in lifting others, you yourself are lifted.
Your waiting season is not wasted. God is using every moment to shape you, prepare you, and position you for what is ahead. Keep trusting, keep serving, and know that He is working behind the scenes.
